Trick or treating is almost a right passage in the UK, and there are certain tips and tricks that you can follow to keep your mind at ease whilst your youngster is out and about filling their boots with candy. Although trick or treating is quite a safe night out, it’s also important to account for everything that could go wrong. Keep them visible:

As we are in the midst of October, the evenings are growing dark at an increasingly rapid rate, so it’s important to make sure that your children are visible when crossing the roads and roaming the streets. There are many ways to keep your children visible when they are trick or treating, you could begin by adding reflective patches to your costumes. You can get really creative with your ideas and can even use glow in the dark paint to customise your child’s costume – this way their outfit will look great and they will be visible to any oncoming cars or traffic.

Keep them close to home:

This goes without saying, but setting boundaries for where your child can trick or treat can really help to keep them safe. Keeping to the streets around your home will prevent them from becoming lost and can really keep your mind at ease throughout the night. Most parents accompany their children when trick or treating, but there comes a time when your children want to go alone. When this time comes, make sure to know where they are, to keep in regular contact with them and to set a curfew, as this will prevent them from staying out too late or getting too carried away.

Keeping your children well informed will essentially keep them safe, this means considering road safety and stranger danger. A creative way to keep your children safe, is to write your name, number and address on tyvek wristbands, and make sure that your child/ children are wearing them. This way, if they become lost or need to reach you, they have all of the necessary information right on their wrists.
